ΑΡΧΑΙΟΛΟΓΙΑ, ΑΝΘΡΩΠΟΛΟΓΙΑ ΚΑΙ ΣΥΓΧΡΟΝΗ ΤΕΧΝΗ

Σε πρόσφατο άρθρο του για τη σχέση μεταξύ φαντασίας και επιστήμης, ο Tim Ingold απευθύνει το ερώτημα, τί μπορεί να προσφέρει η σύγχρονη τέχνη, μεταξύ άλλων, «σε μια οικονομία γνώσης όπου η αναζήτηση για την πραγματική φύση των πραγμάτων έχει γίνει αποκλειστικό προνόμιο του επιστημονικού ορθολογισμού;» Ανεχόμαστε, διερωτάται, την κλίση προς το φανταστικό, ως μια ‘αποζημίωση’ στο πλαίσιο ενός κόσμου που κατά τα άλλα έχει πάψει να συναρπάζει; Τη διατηρούμε ως ένα τεκμήριο δημιουργικότητας, ως ένα πρόσημο πολιτισμού, ως απόδειξη σεβασμού για μια πολιτισμική ποικιλία ή απλώς προς τέρψη και διασκέδασή μας;

Στο προτεινόμενο εργαστήριο ανιχνεύουμε, μεταξύ άλλων, τα ερωτήματα αυτά εστιάζοντας το ενδιαφέρον μας στη σχέση της σύγχρονης τέχνης με πεδία γνώσης που ασχολούνται με τον υλικό πολιτισμό του παρελθόντος ή του παρόντος, όπως η αρχαιολογία και η ανθρωπολογία. Τί μπορεί να προσφέρει η σύγχρονη τέχνη στα πεδία αυτά; Είναι καταδικασμένη να παίζει ρόλο δευτερεύοντα και περισσότερο ‘εικονογραφικό’ ή μπορεί να συμβάλει δυναμικά σε μια συνομιλία που θα συντελέσει στην εξέλιξη θεωριών και πρακτικών και των τριών αυτών πεδίων;

Αναζητούμε δρόμους και μέσα συνομιλίας και διάδρασης μεταξύ των τριών αυτών πεδίων που έχουν κοινά σημεία αναφοράς, αλλά και αποκλίσεις στην ιστορική διαδρομή και τα ενδιαφέροντά τους. Πρόθεσή μας δεν είναι να αναπαράξουμε τους θεσμοθετημένους αυτούς κλάδους ως υποσυστήματα με τη δική του το καθένα λογική, ούτε και να προσεγγίσουμε την τέχνη ως αντικείμενο της αρχαιολογίας και της ανθρωπολογίας.

Αντίθετα επιθυμούμε να ανιχνεύσουμε μια πλατφόρμα συνομιλίας που θα διαταράξει στερεότυπα και θα δημιουργήσει νέες μορφές σκέψης και έκφρασης συμβάλλοντας στην εξέλιξη νέων θεωριών και πρακτικών στα τρία αυτά πεδία. Επιθυμούμε να διερευνήσουμε τα όρια (και να πειραματιστούμε πάνω σε αυτά) ανάμεσα σε πράγματα και ιδέες, εικόνες και λόγους από το παρελθόν και το παρόν.

Στο εργαστήριο θα συμμετάσχουν αρχαιολόγοι, ανθρωπολόγοι, θεωρητικοί τέχνης και εικαστικοί, με την προοπτική να παράξουν όχι μόνο θεωρητικό αλλά και εικαστικό έργο in situ. Το εργαστήριο θα είναι μονοήμερο και θα περιλαμβάνει έκθεση έργων, καλλιτεχνικές δράσεις και στρογγυλό τραπέζι.

Το blog μας είναι ανοιχτό σε όσους/ες έχουν ασχοληθεί με θέματα που αφορούν τη σχέση σύγχρονης τέχνης, αρχαιολογίας και ανθρωπολογίας και επιθυμούν να καταθέσουν ιδέες, εικόνες, κείμενα και άλλο σχετικό υλικό, από την Ελλάδα ή το εξωτερικό. Τελικός στόχος μας είναι να παραχθεί ένα αρχείο που θα αποτελέσει τη βάση για μια συνομιλία τόσο στο στρογγυλό τραπέζι, όσο και μετά το πέρας των εργασιών του εν λόγω συνεδρίου.

ARCHAEOLOGY, ANTHROPOLOGY AND CONTEMPORARY ART

In a recent article οn the relationship between science and imagination, Tim Ingold addresses the question what does art, among other things, have to offer “in an economy of knowledge in which the search for the true nature of things has become the exclusive prerogative of scientific rationality?” Do we tolerate, he wonders, the imagination’s penchant for fantasy as a ‘compensation’ in a world that has otherwise ceased to enthral? Do we uphold art as a relic of creativity, as a sign of civilization, as a proof of our respect for cultural diversity, or do we simply keep it for our delight and entertainment?

In this workshop we investigate these and other questions, and focus our attention on the relationships between contemporary art, archaeology and anthropology. What can contemporary art offer to these fields? Is it relegated to a secondary role, one that is more ‘iconographic’, or ‘illustrative’ or can it contribute dynamically to a dialogue and a collaboration that may result in the development of theories and practices in all three fields?

We are searching for channels and means of communication and interaction between these three fields which present both convergence and divergence of interests throughout their historic trajectories. Our intention is not to reproduce these institutionalised disciplines as established subsystems, each with its own logic; nor is it to approach art as an object of archaeological and anthropological study.

Instead we create a platform of discussion that by breaking with existing stereotypes may create new forms of thought and expression, contributing thus to the development of new theories and practices in these three fields. We wish to explore and work on the borders between objects and ideas, images and discourses from the past and the present.

Archaeologists, anthropologists, art theorists and visual artists will participate in this workshop with the intent to produce not only theoretical, but also visual work in situ. The workshop will take place on January 11, 2015 and will include the exhibition of works, events, and a round table.

Our blog is open to all those who have worked on the relationship between archaeology, anthropology and contemporary art and wish to submit ideas, images, texts and other material from Greece or abroad. Our ultimate goal is to produce an archive that will form the basis for the conversation that will begin at the round table and will continue well beyond the end of this conference.
